NC General Assembly reconvenes
On Wednesday, Jan. 9, both chambers of the North Carolina legislature gathered to take care of initial business, like opening ceremonies and voting on leadership.
Despite large gains by Democrats, many of the top positions of authority still lie with the GOP, who hold a majority in both chambers. Sen. Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) was elected to a fifth term as the president pro tempore of the Senate, the top leadership post in that chamber.
“We have accomplished a lot over the past eight years, but there is still more work to be done,” said Berger from the floor. “I am humbled and honored that my colleagues have chosen me to lead them once again as we work together towards a better North Carolina.”
The House's top spot also remained unchanged. As Speaker Tim Moore (R-Cleveland) was elected by the body for a third-term as speaker, in his floor statements he asked for both sides to consider the needs of the state over party.
"We share a love for the magnificence of our state and local communities, and this prosperous country," Moore said. "Together we will find a balanced path of consensus to tackle tough problems. Serious and bipartisan solutions are needed to confront difficult issues. Our constituents are counting on us to find a fix.Let’s search for the middle ground, instead of the high ground. Bring coalitions together to achieve reform. Negotiate in good faith for the good of our state. Reach across the aisle to achieve change."
Both chambers of the N.C. General Assembly will return Jan. 30 to officially begin work for the 2019-20 biennium.
